Saas Fee in the Swiss Alps

Summer Holiday Activities in Saas Fee in the Swiss Alps

There is so much to do in and around Saas Fee that your problem will be deciding what to take in and what to leave for another time. The accent is on healthy fun activities with lots of fresh air and exercise to suit families and children with varying appetites for adventure. Saas Fee is wonderful for serious walkers with access to the high mountain pastures surrounded by stunning 4,000 metre peaks - see our Family Ski Saas-Fee Walking Guide - but if a stroll in a flower filled alpine meadow followed by a picnic with a mountain lift taking the strain is more appealing to you there is plenty of scope for those keener on relaxation than excitement.

Our childcare programmes enable families with the flexibility they need to take full advantage of all on offer - time for parents to spend with older children whilst youngsters are in our expert care. Above all Saas- Fee prides itself on being a highly child and family frienclly resort and the village has really made an effort to make sure there is a great deal for children to do in an idyllic environment.

Activities for younger children

There is plenty for younger children in Saas Fee - all accessible from the village or from the excellent cable cars that whisk you up the mountain - itself a ride in a space ship for many youngsters. Children 16 and under travel free on the Saas Valley lift systems which is a very valuable saving. Indeed there is plenty to absorb and entertain young children in the car-free village of Saas Fee where activities such as face and t-shirt painting, story telling and treasure hunts are part of the Saas Fee village summer programme - in addition to activities in our childcare clubs. Particularly popular with young children are:

Husky-sled Rides A real thrill - first children meet the huskies and pet them and then a ride in a wheeled sled through the forest.

Meeting the Mountain Animals Children meet goats, marmots,
rabbits and chickens and at Spielboden above Saas Fee the marmots will eat out of your hand. Llama walks are also on offer - they reduce even adults to laughter.

Hohsi Land Above neighbouring Saas Grund, 15 mins by car and well served by local bus, the ‘Hohsi-Land’ playground has a water-park, a themed trail for children and another petting zoo. The playground is reached by cable-car.

Fairy Tale Trail For young imaginations there is the Saas Fee trail of fairy tales and legends which winds through a larch-wood with illustrations bringing legends such as "The Golden Cradle" and "The Secret Dances" to life.

Bread Making Much more fun than it sounds for children who enjoy getting their sleeves rolled up. Children can bake their own bread and even receive a diploma.

At 4-5 years plus many of the activities for older children have easier variations including the Saas Fee Adventure Forest and the Almagellerhorn Adventure Trail.

Summer Events

Saas Fee has over 30 events already scheduled for the summer. Musical highlights, such as the International Alpine Music Festival, take place in July, and the classical music festival weeks, the "Saas-Fee Raiffeisen Festival" in August.

There are also other special summer activities , such as the thrilling Freeski Event, the "Saas-Fee Ride" when some of the world's best (and bravest) freestyle skiers and boarders compete. Check the Saas Fee Events calendar.
Activities for older children

For older children - and some of the more adventurous younger ones - there is plenty to do. As well as mountain-biking, tennis, volleyball, horse riding there is also:

Summer Skiing One of Europe’s best summer ski areas is at 3,600m on the Fee glacier. This is where many of the top international skiers train. Skiing is done in the morning, normally from the beginning of July onwards. You need to be confident on red runs.

Saas Fee Adventure Forest Swing from tree to tree, walk over hanging bridges (photo below): a forest full of adventure for the whole family with various routes and five degrees of difficulty. The two spectacular «tyroliennes» (zip wire) over the gaping Fee Gorge are the centrepiece, one 280 metres long. Various difficulty routes make this fun for adventurous younger children.

Guided Mountain Biking A popular pedalling tour through the meadows and woods surrounding the Saas Fee Village.

Almagellerhorn Adventure Trail In the neighbouring Saas Almagell this is a perfect family adventure hike, including a spectacular 60-metre rope bridge across a canyon, timber walkways and passages over rocks and gorges. Saas Almagell is 20 minutes by car and the trail a short chairlift up the mountain.

Feeblitz Toboggan Run Saas-Fee You ride with a partner or alone on the steep toboggan lift up to the highest «roller-coaster» in the Alps, and then you dash down at speeds up to 40 kph! There is also a bungee trampoline at the toboggan run
in July and August.

Downhill Scooters The trail from Hannig is on a 5 km long off-road ride to Saas Fee - and if you enjoy that there is an 11 km run in Saas Grund. The lift up keeps your energy for the downward journey.

Great family days out

Walking on any of the 350Km of high Alpine trails amongst stunning scenery is an unforgettable experience no matter how far you go. Spring comes late to the high Alpine pastures and flowers bloom well into July.

For rainy days there is a Leisure Centre with indoor swimming-pool, children's pool, sauna, whirlpool and steam-bath, badminton and tennis courts, as well as a wide range of local trips for those who choose to self-drive.

Ice Grotto At Mittelallalin 3,500 m high above Saas Fee is the biggest ice grotto in the world with ice sculptures and all inside the glacier. You can follow this by lunch in the world’s highest revolving restaurant!

Zermatt Even with so much to do in and around Saas Fee we recommend a visit to Zermatt, about 50 minutes by car plus a 15 minute mountain railway journey. The highlight is getting close to the fabulous Matterhorn. Children will also enjoy the mountain railway trip. Zermatt is also a great village to visit. Larger again than Saas Fee and with even more shops and resaurants, many very up-market.

Please remember that activity organisations do change and that some of these activities may not be available for your holiday. Visit Saas Fee Summer web site.
